I'm finally getting off my Butt and moving forward with buying a new comp. I'm having a guildie from WoW build it for me out on the west coast and should hopefully have it in a couple of weeks. So...are y'all still having fun playing? Please don't tell me that I'm gonna get a new box, buy the game, and have you all decide the game sux!

Ok, the long and short of it, by MM | Preacher

Short
-------------------

The game is good, having fun, hopefully they fix the bugs and difficulties and do more class balancing, among that I hope they get the 64bit client and the DX10 version out ASAP. The game is fun, and has much ability to become super, but only if they dont play to the masses. (by this I mean they already nerfed everything that has a penalty)

Long
------------------

If you buy Age of Conan looking for a traditional MMO to be on par with say Everquest, EQ2, or WoW among other titles you may find yourself to be dissapointed in some areas and thrilled in others. AoC is traditional in a few ways....

1. Classes - The classes are built with many restrictions to what the player can use, wear, and do. (classic MMO's)
2. Leveling - Your level is determined by how much experience you gain. (Classinc MMO/RPG)
3. Quests - The quests were supposed to be original and not go here kill this, gather that, but they are. (Classic MMO's)
4. Monsters - The game has traditional monsters by this I mean, giant spiders, humans, wolves, bears, so far no dragons. (Classic MMO's besides the dragons)

Thats about it on the classic scale....now for the AoC un-traditional
AoC has taken the genre of MMO's to new heights and new lows, with this next part I will write my full facts and opinions...I stress facts AND OPINIONS!

1. Combat - The AoC combat area is great and ingenuitive..........until you reach level 50 then it becomes like every other MMO....repetitive.
2. Spell Weaving - Complete waste of time and energy, spell weaving is mostly useless, cool effects stupid abilities, and the fact that you cant cast really blows it away no one uses it.
3. Guild Citys - AoC is one of the first mainstream MMO's to use player citys, this is great awesome and exciting...if they get the npc's fixed soon lol, I know other MMO's have done this but not to the extent AoC has taken it, well see if they can keep up the momentum with it.
4. Content - This is where AoC gets sketchy. My true opinion is that more time was spent on the eye candy than on actual gameplay mechanics, quests, and content overall. Yes the game has just launched but they are already having to hastily add zones for 55-60 level area and above. Set to release a few more areas the next few months.
5. Zones - Yes AoC has zones like traditional MMO's however they put a twist.....its all instanced. I dont mean WoW raid duneon instances, I mean the WORLD is totally instanced. You have "major zones" like Connals Valley, Wild Lands of Zelata, Noble District, and Field of the Dead...(the list goes on and on) and they are ALLL instanced. When you have friends you have to say hey man what instance of Connals are you in I want to join you.....and so on and so forth. Each instance I think holds around 50 people. So at all times of the day there is about 10 instances of every zone going. This cramps the MMO part of an MMORPG....its not massively multiplayer if you cant see others than 50, sounds like a CSS server or something.....
6. Untraditional Class Functions - When I say this I mean a healer goes out to heal, but healers dont have ANY ANY ANY ANY SINGLE TARGET HEALS. Everything is AoE, Cone AoE, or just plain AoE. (yes I said AoE twice) This is a SERIOUS problem adventuring. Healers pull aggro quicker than anyone in the group including DPS, because his heals are AoE if you get an add....its on the healer. Another problem is tanks do not have TAUNT as an ability, so if theres mobs on someone they cant just taunt it off....its a skill thats almost useless. (seriously its broken theres posts and posts and posts on it)
7. PvP - Hopefully they will get everything fixed in PvP side as they are planning. I hope the jail system comes through, but mostly I hope they add flagging on PvE servers, for Guild Raids on citys. Currently its not ingame.

Well thats about it for the moment my wife is griping telling me Im wasting letters cause no one is gonna read it. So anyways gonna cut it =) the game is good please dont take this as flaming, Im enjoying it, but there is a LOT to be desired in the way of traditional MMO's. I want you to know what you are going into and not expect something totally different and drop out after one month of play. Just think about what Ive said, take a troll through the forums on forums.ageofconan.com. But when you do dont think that EVERYONE is hating the game, its fun, enjoyable, and I am having a good time, its just NOT Traditional.

MM | Preacher....just my two cents.

P.S. I left these few opinions to you even though Meat and Drake hate me for some of my opinions. They tell me Im old school and just want everyone to walk everywhere and laugh when I complain theres no travel and adventure that everythings an instance. I just picture MMORPG like an adventure it should be, journey to new areas cut your path in the world instead of having it laid out for you. Stumbling upon a waterfall the designers put there that only a handful know about, finding a dragon in a cave that only your guild knows about and taking it down with a well planned raid. These are things that have yet to be captured in the MMO world.

My opinions are quite biased as I started MMO gaming on Everquest 1 when I was 14. I tried WoW but it was to easy for my taste, I played EQ2 got one level 70 and had fun but it wasnt what fans were looking for (a vamped up EQ which eventually Sony Corp released a press confrence and they said they screwed up and realized finally that players who started EQ2 were looking for a "vamped up EQ" lol) and then I switched to Vanguard which had promise beyond belief but because of financial difficulties ended up failing its first launch and is set to do what Sony calls a Re-Launch the first of next year. Vanguard failed because the crashes and serious poor quality coding. Then AoC rolls to the market with its fresh take on what they think an MMO should be and its great and good but leaves much to be desired.(opinion) Maybe one day Ill release my own MMO and then you guys can tell me how bad it sucks lol.

I thoroughly enjoyed your write up and tbh, it worries me a bit. Yes, I expect to see "Classic MMO" next to a lot of things the game offers, because it is a MMO - or supposed to be, right? But then there's the instances. I don't like instances in WoW but I see them as necessary and I've heard of horror stories in games that pre-dated WoW and how difficult things were with campers and griefers. But to have all those zones instanced? I don't understand it. It really must take the feel out of the game.

I've got a new computer on the way, so while I'll be able to actually run the game, nothing I've seen so far seems to be enough to pull me from a game that I've got +3 years invested. But we'll see!

Wow, your review was spot on.

A couple of dislikes for me is the instanced play and something you didn't touch on...lack of group content early on. I don't have nearly as much experience with MMO's as you have but in wow you've got instanced group (dungeon) content as early as level 10 and by the time you're 30 you've already had RFC (horde), BFD, WC, SFK, RFK and if you're really adventurous you can head on over to alliance lands and do an instance over there. This might not be a bad thing for many players but I really like group play. I'm not talking about a group of 2 or more questers banging out single player quests. I'm talking more about dungeon content where you need the basic classes, tank, heals, dps and toss in mandatory crowd control and I'm a happy camper :)

Oh, let's not forget the quest text. Yeah, some may say it adds to the feel of the game and they're probably right but when you're in level mode it's annoying as hell. Just gimme the damn quest and let me do it!

Just reading what I wrote and I realized it seems like a BLEEP session...because it probably is :)

One of the things I'm really looking forward to is healing in a party setting with the abilities in this game. It seems like nothing I've done before. In wow I played a priest for a long, long time which is pretty much a traditional direct heal healer with a hot and some group heals, as well as a druid that has a direct heal but their bread and butter are their hots and group heals. Kind of opposite from the priest which make the 2 a nice combo in a raid setting.

AoC's priest heals are so different but I still haven't had a chance to put them to the test 25 levels into the game!
